Incorporated: 1764
Origin: Claremont takes its name from Claremont Castle, an English palace named in honor of John Holles, the first Earl of Clare. The castle was built under the direction of Thomas Pelham Holles, who was involved in relations between the American Colonies and England, and a cousin to Governor Benning Wentworth. Claremont's original land grant was a six-mile square area bordering the Connecticut River, including the governor's farm. The first Roman Catholic Church in New Hampshire was built in Claremont in 1823.

Population Trends: Population in Claremont increased by three percent over 50 years, the smallest positive percent change. The largest decennial percent change was six percent between 1950 and 1960. Population change for Claremont totaled 343, from 12,811 in 1950 to 13,154 in 2000. The 2007 Census estimate for Claremont was 13,097 residents, which ranked 22nd among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2007: 299.3 persons per square mile of land area. Claremont contains 43.1 square miles of land area and 0.9 square miles of inland water area.
