Incorporated: 1727

Origin: The town was first chartered in 1727 as a parish of Gilmanton known as Upper Gilmanton, and incorporated as such in 1859. In 1869, the voters of the town, who felt the many locations named Gilmanton was confusing, petitioned to rename the town Belmont, to honor Mr. August Belmont, a New York financier, in hopes that he might make a financial contribution to the town. Mr. Belmont never acknowledged the act, having passed away that same year. Belmont was the residence of Governor William Badger, first elected in 1834.

Population Trends: Population change for Belmont totaled 5,136 over 50 years, from 1,611 in 1950 to 6,747 in 2000. The largest decennial percent change was a 61 percent increase between 1970 and 1980, followed by a 41 percent increase over the next decade. The 2007 Census estimate for Belmont was 7,161 residents, which ranked 45th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2007: 238.4 persons per square mile of land area. Belmont contains 30.1 square miles of land area and 1.8 square miles of inland water area.
