Apprenticeship Programs & Insights Into Industry (a School-to-Work Program)

Apprenticeship is a U.S. Dept. of Labor program, which is delivered through a cooperative agreement with the State Apprenticeship Council and the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training. An agreement between an employer and employee, or apprentice is developed for the specific skilled trade to be learned. Each skill and responsibility and fact of the job is outlined and assigned an appropriate number of learning hours for professional performance standards to be met. An apprenticeship program includes both On-The-Job Training and related instructions for specified occupations requiring mechanical, or technical skills and knowledge. Apprenticeship Training Programs are registered with the New Hampshire State Apprenticeship Council. Employers define pay rates, including wage increments. Advantages to the employer include: Identifies training which is nationally recognized; provides a systematic and structured form of training; promotes long-term employee commitment; ensures availability of related technical instruction; and provides a chance to have school curriculum reflect industry requirements. For more information call, 271-2582.

Apprenticeship enables workers to learn the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in over 800 different occupations.

Insights Into Industry....A Future in NH

Insights into Industry: A Future in NH is a statewide initiative which evolved from a partnership between the Belknap County Economic Development Council (BCEDC) and NH Employment Security (NHES) and the Dept. of Resources and Economic Development (DRED). The project has been underwritten and sponsored by Fleet Bank-NH; Public Service of New Hampshire; and the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. For more information, please call 524-3057

The mission of Insights Into Industry: A Future in NH is to raise awareness of graduating high school seniors as to the career track employment opportunities which exist with industries in their region and throughout New Hampshire. The program provides information for students to evaluate personal, career, and financial needs as well as employment options for careers with a future.

The Benefit for Companies
For the New Hampshire employer the goal is retention of our own young people as a vital part of a stable, well-trained, and productive workforce. The goal is to assist the student in capturing a career with a future.

Who's Involved?
In 1999, over 400 employers committed to the program. The program has the potential to include every school, every employer, and every student in the state. Over 8,500 students at 70 schools have been introduced to the program since 1999.

The Benefit for Students
Insights offers students an awareness of opportunities with good companies after graduation, as well as during summer breaks, internships, or after additional training. Insights provides information on how to access these opportunities, and job search and interview techniques. It provides, in a non-threatening way, the chance to look closer at the company to see if there is a match with the company's technologies, products, other employees, including the company environment and culture.
