Department of Corrections Updates Corrections Special School District Agreement with Department of Education

(Concord, NH) New Hampshire Department of Corrections Commissioner William L. Wrenn announced that the department signed a new interagency agreement with the Department of Education governing the way the Correctional Special School District operates. The Corrections Special School District is comprised of Granite State High School and the Career and Technical Education Center located within all three of the state prisons and provides high school, General Educational Development (GED), and other educational opportunities for incarcerated inmates.

Commissioner Wrenn said, “This agreement defines the department’s responsibilities and informs people what we do and how we do it while providing free and appropriate education to the offender population.”

“Positive educational opportunities are important in the rehabilitation of offenders and their successful reentry into the community,” Commissioner Wrenn added.

Department of Education Commissioner Virginia Barry and members of her staff joined Commissioner Wrenn and members of the department’s education team in the formal agreement signing ceremony on January 14, 2010.

The agreement addresses state and federal laws concerning education and special education services. It also takes into account the security needs of providing education in a prison environment.

Over three hundred inmates participate in education programs within state corrections facilities during each quarter.
