Volunteers add to NH Department of Corrections Activities

(Concord, NH) New Hampshire Department of Corrections inmates received nearly twenty-thousand hours of programming and treatment from community volunteers during Fiscal Year 2009. Corrections Commissioner William L. Wrenn announced that 19,722 hours of volunteer services were provided to the state prisons, transitional housing units, and Secure Psychiatric Unit from July 1, 2008 until June 30, 2009.

Commissioner Wrenn said, “Citizen volunteers provide a wide array of support by offering spiritual, artistic, educational and recreational activities to the offender population each year.”

“The time and energy given by these individuals contributes to the success of the more than twenty seven hundred men and women incarcerated in our facilities,” Commissioner Wrenn said.

During the fiscal year the Department received 382 volunteer applications from members of the public. Applications can be obtained by visiting the DOC website at http://www.nh.gov/nhdoc/public_volunteers.html or by calling Citizen Involvement and Volunteer Coordinator James Vila at 603-271-7355.
