NH Dept. of Corrections Implements New Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity Policy

(Concord, N.H.) Dr. Robert J. MacLeod, Director of the New Hampshire Department of Corrections Division of Medical and Forensics Services, announces that a new policy governing the treatment and management of those found not guilty by reason of insanity (NGRI) has been implemented.

The policy sets up guidelines and protocol for providing appropriate mental health services for these residents so that their response to the treatment plan can be better monitored and revised based on their individual needs.

It outlines admission and orientation program procedures for the Secure Psychiatric Unit (SPU), staff responsibilities during admission process, and the treatment team make up. It also implements procedures for discharge from SPU, discharge from New Hampshire Hospital to another unit, transition services post SPU discharge and NGRI transfer process guidelines.

“Prior to this policy these individuals have received appropriate treatment using general DOC policies and procedures but now we have identified best practices nationwide and can provide consistent delivery of services,” Dr. MacLeod said.

The policy can be viewed in its entirety on the Department of Corrections website: http://www.nh.gov/nhdoc/Policies/documents/6-37ngri.pdf.

There are five persons who have been committed to the SPU as NGRI’s and twenty under supervision and in other treatment programs outside the SPU.
