Lakes Region Facility Closes its Doors
(Laconia, N.H.) The New Hampshire Department of Corrections closed the Lakes Region Facility in Laconia on June 30, 2009. The minimum security, campus style, programming facility had been in operation since 1991.
At 2:30 p.m., the final six inmates were transported to the Northern New Hampshire Correctional Facility in Berlin where they were reassigned to the new dormitory. The Department of Corrections Honor Guard retired the American and New Hampshire flags which have flown over the facility for many years. Warden Jane Coplan was provided an honorable escort from the building by the Honor Guard as she retired from state service after thirty years.
Prior to being renovated into a prison the facility was managed by the Department of Health and Human Services as the Laconia State School for residents with severe mental health issues. At the close of business the property was conveyed to the New Hampshire Department of Administrative Services.
The Laconia District Probation/Parole Office will still operate on the grounds through the month of July.
