Small Fire Causes Minor Damage at Berlin Prison
(Berlin, NH) A small fire was reported in a cleaning closet in the kitchen of the Northern New Hampshire Correctional Facility in Berlin. The fire was contained quickly, damage was minor, and there were no injuries to inmates or staff.
At approximately 8:30 pm on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, a Food Services employee observed smoke in the kitchen corridor. The Berlin Fire Department responded and was escorted into the kitchen where they contained the fire using a nearby fire extinguisher. A preliminary investigation shows the fire was accidental and started in a bucket of cleaning rags. Damage was limited to the rags, the bucket, and a light fixture and is estimated at less than $100.
Warden Larry D. Blaisdell has asked his staff to review and modify the procedure regarding the cleaning and storage of rags throughout the institution.
