Grant Approved for Female Offender Voc-Ed Services

(Concord, N.H.) The New Hampshire Executive Council accepted $41,455.12 in federal grant funds to assist the New Hampshire Department of Corrections in providing vocational educational services for female inmates. The funding comes from the NH Department of Education but originates from the federal Carl D. Perkins Grant. It will expand and create programming for the NH State Prison for Women in Goffstown and the Shea Farm Transitional Housing Unit in Concord.

The grant will fund a program called “Transitioning Today’s Students Into Tomorrow’s Workers.” It will help upgrade existing equipment and purchase new equipment including computers. It will allow for the acquisition of new instructional materials and permit the Department to hire a Consultant from New Hampshire Community Technical College in Manchester.

This grant is in addition to the Department’s Fiscal Year 2008 vocational career and technical education budget and will be in use until November 2008. There are 206 women under the Department jurisdiction and all will have the opportunity to participate in the program if they choose.
