George Washington (1732 - 1799)
Born at Bridges Creek, Westmoreland County (VA); died at "Mount Vernon" (VA).
Surveyor, militia officer, Revolutionary War leader, and first President of the United States.
Portrait by Walter Ingalls (1805 - 1874), 1834, after original by Gilbert Stuart (1755 - 1828).
Purchased by the State of New Hampshire, 1836.
This portrait, a copy of Stuart's "Lansdowne" portrait of Washington, was the first full length portrait to hang in the 1819 State House. The portrait was completed in 1834, and a legislative committee recommended that the artist be paid $100. Ingalls was finally paid $50 by the 1836 legislature, and the portrait was framed and installed in Representatives' Hall. The portrait was given a new frame in 1873. The new frame was made by Robinson & Tilton, of Concord.
Location: Second Floor, Representatives' Hall
