He received his education at Milford and Francestown schools, and was preparing at Kimball Union Academy for his entry examination to Dartmouth College when war broke out. Butler began military service October 12, 1861, as second lieutenant of Company K. He was promoted to captain of Company K December 15, 1862, after the battle of Fredericksburg (VA). June 30, 1864 he was wounded in the knee while serving as an aide to General William F. Smith at the siege of Petersburg (VA). Gangrene set in and he was shipped home to Bennington, NH, where his leg was amputated, July 20, 1864. He died ten days later. Butler was also listed in the regimental history as being an active member of the Signal Corps.
