General John StarkGeneral John Stark (1728 - 1822)
Born at Nutfield (later Londonderry), NH.
Blacksmith, Revolutionary War hero, farmer.
Painted by U.D. Tenney, 1891, after 1810 sketch from life by Hannah Crowninshield.
Portrait commissioner by NH State Legislature, 1891.

General Stark as a Revolutionary war hero is portrayed in uniform at the State House (first floor). A description of Stark's early life is included in Likenesses of War Heroes & Personages in the Collections of The New Hampshire State House & State Library, another publication in the series of descriptions of State of New Hampshire portraits prepared in 1998.

In his post-Revolutionary War old age, Stark was a New Hampshire farmer. Hannah Crowninshield, a Salem, Massachusetts pupil of the Italian-born artist Michel Felice. Miss Crowninshield married James Armstrong, of the United States Navy, in 1819. The sketch was loaned to artist U.D. Tenney for the 1891 portrait by Richard M. Bartleman and Mary Crowninshield.
