Gen. Charles H. Bartlett (1833 - 1900)

Bartlett (1833 - 1900) was born at Sunapee (NH). He studied at academies at Washington and New London (both NH), and was admitted to the Hillsborough County (NH) Bar in 1858. He practiced law at Wentworth (NH) for five years (1858 - 1863), then moved to Manchester (NH), where he lived and practiced law the rest of his life.
Bartlett held a number of state political positions. He was elected mayor of Manchester (served 1872 - 1873), and helped organize Merrimack Savings Bank in 1874. A director of the Merchants' National Bank, Bartlett was serving as Clerk of United States District Court when he was elected to the State Senate (1882). He resigned his court position and was chosen President of the Senate. He subsequently served in the administrations of governors Goodell (1889 - 1891) and Tuttle (1891 - 1893).
