George Washington (1732 - 1799)
Born at Bridges Creek, Westmoreland County (VA); died at "Mount Vernon" (VA).
Surveyor, militia officer, Revolutionary War leader, and first President of the United States.
Portrait by Walter Ingalls (1805 - 1874), 1834, after original by Gilbert Stuart (1755 - 1828).
Purchased by the State of New Hampshire, 1836.
This portrait, a copy of Stuart's "Lansdowne" portrait of Washington, was the first full-length portrait to hang in the State house of 1819. The portrait was completed in 1834, and the artist asked for one hundred dollars. The legislature finally paid Ingalls half the money, and it was framed and hung in Representatives' Hall. The portrait was reframed in 1873; Ingalls was consulted for his thoughts about the new frame.
