James Waldron RemickJames Waldron Remick (1860 - 1943)
Born at Hardwick (VT); died at
Lawyer, jurist, international claims negotiator.
Portrait by C. Arnold Slade, n.d.
Presented to the State, date unknown.

Remick grew up at Colebrook (NH) where his father owned and operated the village hotel. Remick graduated from Colebrook Academy, then went to the University of Michigan Law School (Class of 1882). He was admitted to the New Hampshire Bar in 1882.

Remick practiced law at Colebrook for two years (1883/4). Then he attracted the attention of U.S. Congressman Ossian Ray, who needed someone to run his Littleton (NH) law office while he served in Washington, D.C. Remick was offered a partnership with Ossian Ray, and he ran the Littleton law office until Ray returned from Washington. Then Remick and his brother became partners and opened Remick & Remick, also at Littleton. The firm operated successfully for ten years (1888/98), breaking up when Remick was appointed United States District Attorney.

Remick served as United States District Attorney 1899 - 1903. In 1903 he was named Associate Justice of the State Supreme Court. He served on the State Supreme Court for three years (1901/04), then began almost thirty years of solo legal practice.

In 1930 Judge Remick was appointed Arbiter of German War Claims, by President Herbert Hoover. This was a huge assignment involving tens of millions of dollars, at which Remick labored 1930/32. His last years were marked by chronic ill health.
