. Born Northwood (NH); Manchester lawyer. In state politics from 1910.
Brown (1853-1937) was educated at Northwood Academy and graduated from Dartmouth College (A. B., 1878). He received his law degree from Boston University Law School (1884) and was admitted to the New Hampshire Bar the same year. 1884-1912 Brown practiced law in Manchester, first with Burnham & Brown; then Burnham, Brown & Warren; and finally with Burnham, Brown, Jones & Warren. 1910/11 Brown served as Special Counsel for the State of New Hampshire while the state's railroads appealed their taxes to the State Supreme Court. He also served as president of Amoskeag Savings Bank (1905/12), and as chairman of the New Hampshire Tax Commission (1911/21). 1918/21 Brown chaired the state's constitutional convention; in 1920 he was the state Republicans' nominee for governor and won the election.
Governor Brown served one term in office, declining renomination. His administration was able to reduce the state debt substantially and to reduce taxes. The emphasis on developing state highways continued during the Brown administration.
Following his term in office, Brown became head of the New Hampshire Bankers Association (1922), and in 1924 he was delegate-at-large to the Republican National Convention. He was a member of the New Hampshire General Court (1925/6). Brown served as a trustee of Dartmouth College for twenty years (1911/31), and was active on other corporate boards within the state. He died in 1937.
