About Us > "Certified Rehab" Federal Tax Incentives

In 1976, federal tax policy was reoriented to encourage the preservation of historically and architecturally significant properties. The tax laws have changed many times since then, and so have the federal preservation tax incentives, but the benefits--though more circumscribed--still exist. The work must conform to standards set by the Secretary of the Interior; it must be approved by the DHR and the National Park Service, and it is limited to income-producing properties; but even with those restrictions, over 100 New Hampshire properties involving investments of hundreds of millions of dollars have participated in the program. The tax incentives are particularly beneficial for large-scale projects that would not be feasible otherwise, and have served as important economic generators for financially-distressed areas.
