History
Established in 1976, the New Hampshire Visual Arts Coalition (NHVAC) is an organization whose members represent the state’s non-profit institutions that present the visual arts—museums, galleries, art centers and associations. With meetings scheduled two to three times per year, the NHVAC offers opportunities for networking, resource sharing, and collaborative projects.
Mission of the NHVAC:
To promote awareness of the visual arts and to encourage an understanding that the arts are crucial to the state’s quality of life and are essential to a healthy economy.
The current membership of the NHVAC includes the state’s larger museums and galleries (Currier Museum of Art, Hood Museum of Art); many college and university galleries (UNH Durham, Keene State, Plymouth State, Southern New Hampshire University); and statewide and local art associations (NH Art Association, League of NH Craftsmen). The New Hampshire State Council on the Arts is also a member and long-term partner.
Statewide NHVAC-initiated exhibition projects:
- Sculpture/New Hampshire (1981)
- Graphics/New Hampshire (1983)
- The Artist and the Environment: New Hampshire (1992-93)
- New Hampshire: The State of Art (2005)
Each of these projects included collaborative promotional efforts and the publication of either a brochure or catalogue. The projects have garnered increased appreciation for New Hampshire artists and arts organizations throughout the state and northern New England.
More recently, in fall 2005, NHVAC members produced a statewide series of exhibitions on the theme of New Hampshire: The State of Art. Each of these projects included collaborative promotional efforts and the publication of either a brochure or catalogue. The projects have garnered increased appreciation for New Hampshire artists and arts organizations throughout the state and northern New England.
To facilitate communication among our members, an organizational e-mail listserv is maintained by the NH State Council on the Arts. Members can share information with each other regarding upcoming meetings, traveling exhibition availability, announcement of special events, position vacancies, etc.
