New Hampshire Poet Laureate Nominations Open

The Poetry Society of New Hampshire is now accepting nominations for the position of:

STATE POET LAUREATE
for the term 2009 – 2014
Application Deadline
November 1, 2008

The position of New Hampshire Poet Laureate was established in 1967, with Paul Scott Mower serving as the state's first poet laureate. Other laureates have been Eleanor Vinton, Richard Eberhart, Donald Hall, Maxine Kumin, Jane Kenyon, Marie Harris, Cynthia Huntington, and Patricia Fargnoli. While the position is honorary, the mission of the Poetry Society of New Hampshire is to promote poetry and so candidates will be selected based on both their achievements and their ability to advance poetry in the public domain. To be considered, a poet must be a resident of New Hampshire and be nominated as outlined below. While a poet may be self or other nominated, the latter will be given preference.

How to Make a Nomination:

  • Make six sets of each of the following and staple them together. Keep one copy for yourself and mail the remaining five.
  • Nomination form to be used as cover letter for the packets of supporting materials you will provide.
    • Download official nomination form: MSWord / PDF
  • Don't have Adobe Acrobat Reader®? Click here to download for free!

  • Publication Credits. Do not include any of the following: prose writing, vanity press publications or any other self-published work, non-print (i.e. online) publications, and works appearing in publications for which you served as editor. We are seeking quality, not quantity of writing.
  • Documentation of nominee's accomplishments and contributions to poetry at large. This could include related professional or volunteer work, awards and honors, and letters of recommendation.
  • Nominator's Statement/Vision of the Role of State Poet Laureate and how the nominee would fulfill this role.
  • Finalists may be asked for samples or copies of their published work.

Postmark Deadline: November 1, 2008 or earlier. We can not be responsible for mail that is lost or delayed. Nominations must be mailed to the Poetry Society of New Hampshire, PO Box 637, Farmington, NH 03835. We cannot accept additions or corrections after the deadline. We cannot discuss the status of any application. No material will be returned.
