Fifteen New Hampshire High Schools will Participate in 2008 Poetry Out Loud Competition

Concord, NH…………Fifteen New Hampshire high schools will participate in the 2008 New Hampshire Poetry Out Loud Competition (National Recitation Project) sponsored by the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the Poetry Foundation.

By encouraging high school students to memorize and perform great poems, Poetry Out Loud invites the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word, and theater into the English class. This exciting new program, which began in 2005, helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.

The program consists of a three-week curriculum (provided by the National Endowment for the Arts) in which student develop memorization skills and a deeper understanding of classic poetry. Each high school holds a competition in classrooms to select winners interested in participating in a school-wide competition. Each participating high school then selects a winner to compete at a regional and state final competition. The state regional and finals competition will take place at Keene State College in the Arts Center at Brickyard Pond on March 22, 2008. (Snow date is March 29, 2008).

The winner of the state competition will receive $200 and an all expenses paid trip to the national competition in Washington, DC, in April 2008. Additionally, the winner's school will receive $500 to purchase poetry books. The individual state runner-up will receive $100 with an additional $200 award to his/her school for poetry books.
