Arts Education
Award Recipient: Anna Nuttall, Arts Educator, Portsmouth Middle School and Portsmouth Music and Arts Center

Anna NuttallEvery day, in the classroom and in the community, Anna Nuttall works with students of all ages, engaging them in the creative process and advocating for their voices and artwork. Working with nationally recognized artist Jerome Meadows, she developed curriculum to involve students in the Portsmouth African Burying Ground project, incorporating their work into the Park’s permanent sculptural elements. She has served on the board of Art-Speak, Portsmouth’s Cultural Commission, currently serves as Educational Outreach Coordinator for the Seacoast African American Cultural Center, and is an artist in residence for Arts in Reach, a program that engages at-risk teenage girls in the arts. Roger Goldenberg, an artist-educator in Portsmouth, has written of Anna: “Every molecule of Anna’s being is dedicated to teaching art to young people. She truly lives to share the beauty of art and its potential to engage and inspire; to infuse the joy of learning while making art; to use art as a vehicle to teach children life skills while expanding their visual awareness and lead them to explore new ideas, experiences and ways of thinking.”
