Julie Mento, Visual Arts Associate
Julie Mento came to the NH State Council on the Arts in 1998 to serve as archive preparator for New Hampshire’s presentation at the 1999 Smithsonian Folklife Festival. During that time she also co-owned the Covered Bridge Frame Shop and Fine Art Gallery with her husband, Anthony Mento. Once the festival concluded, she worked as part of a team to restage the festival at the 2000 Celebrate New Hampshire Festival that took place at the Hopkinton State Fairgrounds.
In 2001, Mento was hired as Arts Program Assistant where she implemented the State Arts Council's popular E-news service and became the official webmaster for the website, which has become the primary repository for all of the State’s Arts news, resources and grants information.
In 2002, Mento was promoted to Artist Services and Public Art Coordinator, responsible for the annual Fellowship Awards, New Works Grants, and Percent for Art Program.
She is now Visual Arts Associate and, utilizing her organizing, research and graphic design skills, she works to promote the State Arts Council’s programs and events throughout the year. In 2007, Mento was honored as one of New Hampshire's 40 under Forty by the Union Leader.
Born in Maryland she moved with her family to Hampstead, NH at the age of 2 where she attended public schools and spent most of her time in the art room during and after school. In 1988, Mento moved to Deering, NH near Lotte Jacobi’s residence where natural settings and rural living inspired her artistic talents.
Mento is currently pursuing her MS in Non-Profit Leadership. She received her BFA from New England College in 1998 where she was the recipient of an Arts Achievement Scholarship and the Creative Arts Award of Academic Excellence. She was also the recipient of Chubb Life’s Young Artist Award in 1994 and 1995. In 2003 she and her husband, Anthony Mento, built their own home tucked into the Mink Hills of Warner among a strong contingency of rural artists. Mento continues her artistic commitment in her studio and on computer as graphic designer.
