Jane Eklund, Programs Information Officer
Jane Eklund has first-hand knowledge of how valuable the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts can be for artists: in 2000, she was a fellowship recipient in poetry. She joined the State Arts Council in August 2008 as Programs Information Officer, and is pleased to be playing a part in fostering a state-wide community of artists.
Jane is a poet, fiction writer and journalist who worked for fifteen years on the staff of the Monadnock Ledger-Transcript, a community newspaper based in Peterborough. She held several positions on the editorial staff, serving most recently as Arts and Magazine Editor. She helped to develop and then went on to edit the paper’s monthly magazine supplement, The Occasional Moose. During her years at the Ledger-Transcript, she earned numerous awards from the New Hampshire Press Association, including being named Writer of the Year three times. Earlier work experience includes teaching at the Meeting School in Rindge, running a youth hostel in Gettysburg, Pa., and freelance copyediting and proofreading.
Jane has a bachelor’s degree in English from Colby College and an MFA from the University of Iowa Writer’s Workshop. In addition to the State Arts Council grant, for her literary endeavors she earned a 2004 fiction grant from the Astraea Lesbian Action Foundation and won first place in the Iowa Arts Council Literary Awards in 1984. She has been a fellow at Blue Mountain Center in Blue Mountain Lake, N.Y., and at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in Amherst, Va. Her writing has appeared in literary journals including the Massachusetts Review, the Georgia Review, The Sun and the North American Review.
She and her partner, Sarah Bauhan, live in the Monadnock Region.
