Frequently Asked Questions
What Information is Available to Consumers?

By calling the Board, any consumer can obtain the following information:

Verification that the physician is currently or was ever licensed in NH

Date of original licensure, license number and business address and phone number

Dates and locations of medical training and residency training

Declared specialty and whether or not the physician is ABMS Board Certified in that or any other specialty.

Whether the Board has ever taken any disciplinary action against the physician and if so, what specific action was taken. Further details of any Board action can be obtained by writing to the Board to obtain a copy of the action.

New Hampshire law does not permit the Board to disclose whether a complaint has ever been filed against a physician. Complaints which have not warranted disciplinary action are not available to the public. These complaints are kept on file, however, in the event that future complaints may indicate a pattern of conduct which warrants disciplinary action.

The Board recognizes the difficulty that consumers have when choosing a physician. It is important that consumers consult a wide variety of information sources when making this important decision. Licensure and training information can only provide a starting point. Friends, neighbors and co-workers can provide useful references about local physicians. Most importantly, every consumer should feel free to consult the physician before making the final choice. If you are not satisfied, choose again. It’s your health and your choice.
