Fatal Choices Logo

Many people have viewed underage drinking as a rite of passage, to adulthood. This attitude has lead to problems such as binge drinking and other high-risk drinking situations. Alcohol is a major factor in the three leading causes of death for young people in America.

SUICIDES, HOMICIDES, MOTOR VEHICLE CRASHES

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for those ages 15 to 20. Youths in this age group are killed in traffic crashes at twice the rate of general population. Alcohol is involved in over 35 percent of these crashes.

The goal of the Fatal Choices program is to reduce drinking and driving. The program allows participants to operate a simulated motor vehicle (Golf Cart) through a course while wearing a pair of Fatal Vision Goggles that simulate visual impairment at BAC levels from .07 to .20+. The intent of the Fatal Chioices Porgram is to raise awareness by demonstrating the dangers associated with drinking and driving. The Division has goggles that simulate daylight and night time vision.

The Division of Enforcement offers a program to make high school students and faculty aware of the dangers and possible consequences of alcohol use. Featuring a video presentation of:

"Brandon tells his story"

"Do you have any idea how it feels to be treated like you're mentally retarded when you're not?" - Brandon Silveria

You're about to meet a remarkable young man who has paid and will keep paying a terrible price for a stupid choice he made when he was seventeen.

At the end of a long, tiring day, Brandon Silveria had a few drinks at a party, managed to drive his friends home, then wrapped his car around a tree. He spent the next two and half months in a coma, the next two years in rehab. His speech is slurred, his walk is unsteady, his memory is permanently impaired.

You'll hear first hand from Brandon what it's like to fight every day to get his life back to where it was. You'll meet his high school friends who are through college now and moving on. You'll get to know the extraordinary Silveria family and begin to understand where Brandon gets his courage.

Most of all, you'll see how many lives can be changed forever by one irresponsible decision.
