97. A defendant, who is represented by attorney, may enter a
plea of not guilty without formal arraignment by filing at, or before, the time
fixed for arraignment, a written statement signed by the defendant certifying
that he has reviewed a copy of the indictment, has read it or had it read or
explained to him, understands the substance of the charge, waives formal
arraignment, and pleads not guilty to the charge. (See Appendix for form.)
