News and Updates/February 5, 2008: Reminder to sign up for training

The Office of Mediation and Arbitration has overall responsibility for managing, developing and overseeing all of the court system's alternative dispute resolution (ADR) programs.

The law which established the Office of Mediation and Arbitration, effective July 1, 2007, authorized the Judicial Branch to develop programs designed to:

  • increase citizen satisfaction with the legal system
  • provide affordable justice
  • reduce protracted and repetitive litigation
  • empower participants to make decisions affecting their future
  • enhance court efficiency
  • institute dispute resolution processes

The duties of the Office of Mediation and Arbitration are to:

  • guide the development of ADR programs
  • promote ADR solutions
  • serve as an ADR resource to courts
  • support the administration of ADR programs in all courts

The office also serves as a resource to ADR professionals including mediators, arbitrators, neutral evaluators and parent coordinators. In coordination with the judicial branch, the office sets standards and qualifications for dispute resolution professionals; provides access to dispute resolution providers in all divisions of the court system; and oversees the quality of dispute resolution programs.
The New Hampshire Court system offers several Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Programs which experience has shown can save time and money both for the parties involved and the Courts. These Alternative Dispute Resolution processes are less formal and provide the parties with a greater determination in the outcome, which increases party satisfaction. These processes also allow for the early disposition of cases without having to go through a full trial discovery process, which saves the parties significant expense and conserves scarce judicial resources.
