BASIC PURPOSE: To supervise and coordinate the activities of
workers associated with the operation of a retail store.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Acts as store
manager in a medium volume retail environment.
·
Supervises
staff up to the Retail Store Manager I level, and supervises performance
objectives of retail store employees to meet assigned group goals.
·
Teaches retail
store procedures to subordinate employees through explanation, demonstration or
supervised practice.
·
Schedules and
coordinates work assignments for full and part-time subordinate employees,
including resolving conflicting demands on time usage to meet varying consumer
demand.
·
Supervises the
unloading of goods or merchandise delivered from a central warehouse.
·
Assumes
responsibility for all levels of inventory figures based on sales or projected
consumer demand.
·
Assumes
responsibility for merchandising the retail sales area of the store to follow
NH State Liquor Commission guidelines, to include making determinations on
merchandise displays based on customer preference and anticipated sales.

Verifies
register tapes and makes bank deposits, including resolving conflicting or
voided sales transactions, prepares and transmits regular and special reports
covering sales, stock, deposits, and other activities, and allocates funding
received annually to staff temporary Laborer and Retail Store Clerk I
positions.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:
Skill: Requires skill in developing formats and
procedures for special applications OR in investigating and reviewing the use
of equipment and data for a specialized function.
Knowledge: Requires understanding and using business or
trades vocabulary or basic arithmetic to perform standard operating procedures.
Impact: Requires responsibility for contributing to
immediate, ongoing agency objectives by facilitating the direct provision of
services to the public or other state agencies.
Errors at this level result in inaccurate reports or invalid test
results and require a significant investment of time and resources to detect.
Supervision: Requires direct supervision of programs or of
employees doing work which differs from the supervisor, including disciplining
employees, solving personnel problems, recommending hiring and firing
employees, and developing work methods.
The supervisor in this position manages a working unit or section with
responsibility for employee performance appraisal.
Working Conditions: Requires performing regular job functions in
a controlled environment with minimal exposure to disagreeable job elements and
little risk of hazard to physical or mental health.
Physical Demands: Requires medium work, including continuous
strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting as well as
performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or coordination
in operating machines or equipment.
Communication: Requires explaining facts, interpreting
situations, or advising individuals of alternative or appropriate courses of
action. This level also requires
interviewing or eliciting information from state employees or members of the
general public.
Complexity: Requires coordinating a combination of
diverse job functions in order to integrate professional and technical agency
goals. This level also requires
considerable judgment to implement a sequence of operations or actions.
Independent Action: Requires a range of choice in applying a
number of technical or administrative policies under general direction and
making routine decisions or in recommending modifications in work procedures
for approval by supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from high school or G.E.D.
equivalent. Each additional year of
approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work
experience.
Experience: Five years’ experience in a position
involving public contact work and retail store experience, two years of which
shall have been in a supervisory position.
License/Certification: Valid driver’s license required for
travel to different store locations.
RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Thorough knowledge of principles and methods
of retail store management and merchandising.
Thorough knowledge of bookkeeping methods and procedures applicable to
the maintenance of retail store records.
Thorough knowledge of inventory control and sound stock handling and
recording methods and procedures.
Working knowledge of procedures and policies prescribed for the
operation of state stores. Ability to
plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates. Ability to perform mathematical computations
with speed and accuracy and prepare required reports. Ability to effectively train subordinate
employees in the operation of a state liquor store. Ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships with other employees and customers. Must be willing to maintain appearance
appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency
appointing authority.
