BASIC PURPOSE: To supervise and participate in the daily
working operations of a retail store.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Acts as a
store manager in a small volume retail environment or as occasional manager in
a large volume retail environment.
·
Supervises staff
up to the Retail Store Clerk II level, schedules assignments of full and
part-time employees, and reviews work of store personnel for accuracy.
·
Provides
on-going training concerning routine operations and work procedures to retail
store employees.
·
Assumes
responsibility for all levels of inventory control and security (fraud
deterrence).
·
Monitors the
unloading and verifying of store merchandise and makes adjustments to
merchandise reorder inventory figures based on sales.
·
Studies sales
trends furnished by data processing printouts.
·
Verifies
register sales and makes bank deposits.
·
Assumes
responsibility for merchandising the retail sales area of the store to follow
NH State Liquor Commission guidelines, to include making determinations on
special merchandise displays, keeping in mind customer preference and demand.

Prepares and
transmits regular and special reports covering sales, stock, deposits and other
activities.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:
Skill: Requires skill in developing formats and
procedures for special applications OR in investigating and reviewing the use
of equipment and data for a specialized function.
Knowledge: Requires understanding and using business or
trades vocabulary or basic arithmetic to perform standard operating procedures.
Impact: Requires responsibility for contributing to
immediate, ongoing agency objectives by facilitating the direct provision of
services to the public or other state agencies.
Errors at this level result in inaccurate reports or invalid test
results and require a significant investment of time and resources to detect.
Supervision: Requires direct supervision of other
employees doing related or similar work, including scheduling work,
recommending leave, reviewing work for accuracy, performance appraisal, or
interviewing applicants for position vacancies.
Working Conditions:
Requires performing regular job functions in a controlled environment with
minimal exposure to disagreeable job elements and little risk of hazard to
physical or mental health.
Physical Demands: Requires medium work, including continuous
strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting as well as
performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or coordination
in operating machines or equipment.
Communication: Requires explaining facts, interpreting
situations, or advising individuals of alternative or appropriate courses of
action. This level also requires
interviewing or eliciting information from state employees or members of the
general public.
Complexity: Requires coordinating a combination of
diverse job functions in order to integrate professional and technical agency
goals. This level also requires
considerable judgment to implement a sequence of operations or actions.
Independent Action: Requires a range of choice in applying a
number of technical or administrative policies under general direction and
making routine decisions or in recommending modifications in work procedures
for approval by supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from high school or G.E.D.
equivalent. Each additional year of
approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work
experience.
Experience: Four years’ experience in a position
involving public contact work and retail store experience, two years of which
shall have been in a supervisory position.
License/Certification: Valid driver’s license required to
travel to different store locations.
RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Thorough knowledge of principles and methods
of retail store management and merchandising.
Thorough knowledge of bookkeeping methods and procedures applicable to
the maintenance of retail store records.
Thorough knowledge of inventory control and sound stock handling and
recording methods and procedures.
Working knowledge of procedures and policies prescribed for the
operation of sales stores. Ability to
plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates. Ability to perform mathematical computations
with speed and accuracy and prepare required reports. Ability to effectively train subordinate
employees in the operation of a state liquor store. Ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships with other employees and customers. Must be willing to maintain appearance
appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency
appointing authority.
