BASIC PURPOSE: To perform routine supervisory duties in
assisting with the operation of a retail store.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Works under
the general supervision of store manager in assisting with managing daily store
operations such as opening and closing the store, setting up merchandising
displays and equipment, making deposits, and taking inventory.
·
Supervises
staff up to the Retail Store Clerk II level, prepares work and time schedules
for employee job assignments, and reviews work of store personnel for accuracy.
·
Provides
routine training and guidance on merchandising techniques and customer
relations to new store employees.
·
Assumes
responsibility for all levels of inventory control and security (fraud
deterrence), accounts for stock, and maintains inventory, including
anticipating sale items as necessary.

Calculates
totals of sales transactions, and prepares and makes bank deposits.
·
Schedules,
according to need and within budget, usage of the funds allotted to the store
annually to staff temporary Laborer and Retail Store Clerk I positions.
·
Reviews
computer print-outs on stock and makes recommendations to improve inventory
control.
·
Assists in
preparing regular and special reports covering sales, stock on hand, receipts
of merchandise, cash receipts, deposits and other activities.
·
Assumes
responsibility for merchandising the retail sales area of the store to follow
NH State Liquor Commission guidelines.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:
Skill: Requires skill in recommending routine
changes in standardized operating procedures OR in retrieving, compiling, and
reporting data according to established procedures OR in operating complex
machines.
Knowledge: Requires understanding and using business or
trades vocabulary or basic arithmetic to perform standard operating procedures.
Impact: Requires responsibility for contributing to
immediate, ongoing agency objectives by facilitating the direct provision of
services to the public or other state agencies.
Errors at this level result in inaccurate reports or invalid test
results and require a significant investment of time and resources to detect.
Supervision: Requires direct supervision of other
employees doing related or similar work, including scheduling work,
recommending leave, reviewing work for accuracy, performance appraisal, or
interviewing applicants for position vacancies.
Working Conditions: Requires performing regular job functions in
a controlled environment with minimal exposure to disagreeable job elements and
little risk of hazard to physical or mental health.
Physical Demands: Requires medium work, including continuous
strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting as well as
performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or coordination
in operating machines or equipment.
Communication: Requires explaining facts, interpreting
situations, or advising individuals of alternative or appropriate courses of
action. This level also requires
interviewing or eliciting information from state employees or members of the
general public.
Complexity: Requires a combination of job functions to
establish facts, to draw daily operational conclusions, or to solve practical
problems. This level also requires
providing a variety of alternative solutions where only limited standardization
exists.
Independent Action: Requires a range of choice in applying a
number of technical or administrative policies under general direction and
making routine decisions or in recommending modifications in work procedures
for approval by supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from high school or G.E.D.
equivalent. Each additional year of
approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work
experience.
Experience: Three years’ experience in a position
involving public contact work and retail store experience, one year of which
shall have been in a supervisory position.
License/Certification: Valid driver’s license required for
travel to different store locations.
RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Thorough knowledge of principles and methods
of retail store management and merchandising.
Thorough knowledge of bookkeeping methods and procedures applicable to
the maintenance of retail store records.
Thorough knowledge of inventory control and sound stock handling and
recording methods and procedures.
Working knowledge of procedures and policies prescribed for the
operation of state stores. Ability to
plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates. Ability to perform mathematical computations
with speed and accuracy and prepare required reports. Ability to effectively train subordinate
employees in the operation of a state liquor store. Ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships with other employees and customers. Must be willing to maintain appearance
appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency
appointing authority.
