BASIC PURPOSE: To accept and account for cash register
receipts, maintain inventory and report sales results in a retail store.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Verifies and
enters details of financial transactions including balancing work day cash with
total sales.
·
Accounts for
cash register receipts including making bank deposits, taking inventory,
setting up registers and processing credit card sales.
·
Checks and
maintains inventories of stock items including receiving, unpacking and storing
a variety of goods and supplies.
·
Sets up
merchandising displays to promote sales.
·
Sells
sweepstakes tickets to customers and operates sweepstakes ticket dispensing
machine.
·
Assists
customers by answering routine questions regarding products, prices, location
in store, and brand comparisons.
·
Provides
supervision to Retail Store Clerk I’s and Laborers.
·
Functions in
the capacity of a Retail Store Manager I or II as needed.
·
On occasion is
assigned to work in other stores requiring travel to store location.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:
Skill: Requires
skill in recommending routine changes in standardized operating procedures OR
in retrieving, compiling, and reporting data according to established
procedures OR in operating complex machines.
Knowledge: Each additional year of approved formal
education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.
Impact: Requires responsibility for contributing to
agency objectives by ensuring the accuracy of support activities within one or
more organizational units. Errors at
this level affect the work of others or have measurable monetary consequences,
and require immediate verification and correction in order to complete
succeeding work operations.
Supervision:
Requires partial supervision of other employees doing work which is related or
similar to the supervisor, including assigning job duties, providing training,
giving instructions and checking work.
Working Conditions: Requires performing regular job functions in
a controlled environment with minimal exposure to disagreeable job elements and
little risk of hazard to physical or mental health.
Physical Demands: Requires medium work, including continuous
strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting as well as
performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or coordination
in operating machines or equipment.
Communication: Requires explaining facts, interpreting
situations, or advising individuals of alternative or appropriate courses of
action. This level also requires
interviewing or eliciting information from state employees or members of the
general public.
Complexity: Requires a combination of job functions to
establish facts, to draw daily operational conclusions, or to solve practical
problems. This level also requires
providing a variety of alternative solutions where only limited standardization
exists.
Independent Action:
Requires making a limited number of choices in selecting among alternative
courses of action under supervisory guidance and in performing job functions
according to a variety of prescribed policies or procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from high school, G.E.D. or its
equivalent. Each additional year of
approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work
experience.
Experience: Two years of experience as a Retail Store
Clerk I, Cashier/Clerk or equivalent retail experience.
License/Certification: Valid driver’s license required for
travel to different store locations.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have attained 18th birthday
on or before date of application.
RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Knowledge of routine storekeeping methods and
practices. Ability to perform simple
arithmetical computations with speed and accuracy. Ability to make change rapidly involving the
use of cash registers. Ability to
discuss the use of products sold in a retail liquor store with customers. Ability to supervise the work of other staff,
to include assigning job duties, providing training, giving instructions, and
checking work. Ability to meet and
maintain harmonious relationships with the buying public. Must be willing to maintain appearance
appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency
appointing authority.
