BASIC PURPOSE:  To provide direct care and training services to residents/clients and to supervise subordinates in a group home setting or an institution under supervision of professional staff or a residence manager.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·        Assists in the daily operation of direct care and training services and reviews services systems for effectiveness.

 

·        Monitors medication tracking system and books to ensure proper administration of individual treatments.

 

·        Provides training, modeling and assistance to residents/clients in appropriate treatment, leisure or recreation activities which reflect their interests and needs.

 

·        Acts as liaison between family members, service agencies, and professional staff to explain treatment outcome of resident/client.

 

·        Provides training and orientation regarding care and treatment needs of residents/clients.

 

·        Provides transportation for and escorts residents/clients to and from appointments and activities.

 

·        Supervises and schedules work activities of lower level Resident Care Assistants during an assigned shift.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:

 

Skill:  Requires skill in recommending routine changes in standardized operating procedures OR in retrieving, compiling and reporting data according to established procedures OR in operating complex machines.

 

Knowledge:  Requires understanding and using business or trades vocabulary or basic arithmetic to perform standard operating procedures.

 

Impact:  Requires responsibility for contributing to agency objectives by ensuring the accuracy of support activities within one or more organizational units.  Errors at this level affect the work of others or have measurable monetary consequences, and require verification and correction in order to complete succeeding work operations.

 

Supervision:  Requires partial supervision of other employees doing work which is related or similar to the supervisor, including assigning job duties, providing training, giving instructions and checking work.

 

Working Conditions:  Requires performing regular job functions in an adverse working environment containing a combination of disagreeable elements which impact significantly upon the employee's capacity for completing work assignments.  This level includes work-related accidents or assault.

 

 

 

Physical Demands:  Requires medium to heavy work, including continuous physical exertion such as frequent bending, lifting or climbing.

 

Communication:  Requires explaining facts, interpreting situations, or advising individuals of alternative or appropriate courses of action.  This level also requires interviewing or eliciting information from state employees or members of the general public.

 

Complexity:  Requires a combination of job functions using minimal judgment to perform a variety of job tasks according to clearly prescribed standard practices and procedures.

 

Independent Action:  Requires making a limited number of choices in selecting among alternative courses of action under supervisory guidance and in performing job functions according to a variety of prescribed policies or procedures.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  Graduation from high school, G.E.D. or its equivalent.  Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

 

Experience:  Three years experience as a Resident Care Assistant or in a similar job capacity working with the mentally ill or the developmentally disabled population, one year of which must have been in a supervisory position in a health care facility.

 

License/Certification:  Valid New Hampshire driver's license and access to transportation as required to transport residents/clients to appointments and activities.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

 

Must have satisfactorily completed the required in-service training for Resident Care Assistant Trainee level and as required by the employer.

 

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:  A broad knowledge of mental illness, and the social, economic and psychological aspects of illness for the individual resident.  Working knowledge of hospital and community programs and how to engage them for patient treatment.  Skill in basic interviewing involving understanding of fundamentals of human development and behavior.  Skill in relating well to residents/clients, families, subordinates and supervisors as a means of achieving work goals.  Ability to maintain a rehabilitative attitude and relationship with residents/clients.  Ability to work with a professional staff to achieve specific treatment objectives.  Ability to comprehend, act upon and convey oral and written instructions.  Ability to relate positively and therapeutically to mentally ill persons and identify the benefits of various restorative therapies.  Ability to maintain updated and comprehensive patient reports, ward schedules and activities programming.  Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
