BASIC PURPOSE: To provide direct care services and
training to residents/clients and to assist in training subordinate staff under
supervision of professional staff or a residence manager.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists in
implementing an existing plan of direct resident/client care and treatment by
providing for the daily needs of residents/clients regarding hygiene and minor
treatment procedures as directed by a nurse.

Takes temperatures,
blood pressures and performs other bedside care; may collect samples for
routine laboratory examinations.
·
Participates in
treatment, leisure, and recreation activities which reflect the needs and
interests of residents/clients.
·
Collects data, writes
treatment notes, and participates in implementing resident/client treatment
programs as determined by health team.
·
Provides
transportation for and escorts residents/clients to and from appointments and
activities.
·
Trains direct care
staff in daily work procedures and performs related clerical functions.
·
Provides residents/clients
with basic information and facilitates the adjustment of new residents/clients
to living circumstances.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:
Skill: Requires skill in applying instructions
to accomplish different job functions OR in operating machines for a variety of
different purposes.
Knowledge: Requires understanding and using
business or trades vocabulary or basic arithmetic to perform standard operating
procedures.
Impact: Requires minimal responsibility for
contributing to agency objectives by supporting or performing routine work
activities within a small organizational unit. Errors at this level are of minor consequence and are
readily detected through frequent checking or inspection.
Supervision: Requires partial supervision of other
employees doing work which is related or similar to the supervisor, including
assigning job duties, providing training, giving instructions and checking
work.
Working Conditions: Requires performing regular job
functions in an adverse working environment containing a combination of
disagreeable elements which impact significantly upon the employee's capacity
for completing work assignments.
This level includes work-related accidents or assault.
Physical Demands: Requires medium to heavy work,
including continuous physical exertion such as frequent bending, lifting or
climbing.
Communication: Requires explaining facts, interpreting
situations, or advising individuals of alternative or appropriate courses of
action. This level also requires
interviewing or eliciting information from state employees or members of the
general public.
Complexity: Requires a combination of job functions
using minimal judgment to perform a variety of job tasks according to clearly
prescribed standard practices and procedures.
Independent Action: Requires making a limited number of
choices in selecting among alternative courses of action under supervisory
guidance and in performing job functions according to a variety of prescribed
policies or procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from high school, G.E.D. or
its equivalent.
Experience: One year's experience as a Resident
Care Assistant or in a similar capacity working with the mentally ill or
developmentally disabled population.
License/Certification: Valid New Hampshire driver's license
and access to transportation as required to transport residents/clients to
appointments and activities.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Satisfactory
completion of in-service training at the Resident Care Assistant I level.
RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Knowledge of the physical and emotional
needs of elderly and/or mentally or physically ill people. Knowledge of sanitary procedures. Knowledge of games and recreational
activities. Ability to recognize,
identify and respond to physical and emotional need of residents of
institutions or clients in group home settings. Ability to maintain statistical and narrative records. Ability to discharge housekeeping and
primary resident care responsibilities.
Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to establish and maintain effective working and
social relationships with residents/clients, staff, relatives, relatives and
volunteers. Must be willing to
maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as
determined by the agency appointing authority.
