BASIC PURPOSE:  To teach and motivate special needs students or residents according to an established curriculum.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·        Plans and outlines class work adapting the classroom activities, teaching methods and academic materials presented to meet the special needs of students.

 

·        Counsels special needs students.

 

·        Teaches regularly organized classes in elementary, secondary, and vocational school subjects.

 

·        Attends meetings with teaching staff or parents for the purpose of establishing obtainable goals for special needs students.

 

·        Submits progress reports on each student in the formal education program with recommendations as to further development.

 

·        Prepares classroom materials, maintaining current lesson plans and student review materials.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:

 

Skill:  Requires minimal skill in performing a series of routine procedures OR in operating equipment according to standardized instructions.

 

Knowledge:  Requires logical or scientific understanding to analyze problems of a specialized or professional nature in a particular field.

 

Impact:  Requires responsibility for contributing to immediate, ongoing agency objectives by facilitating the direct provision of services to the public or other state agencies.  Errors at this level result in inaccurate reports or invalid test results and require significant investment of time and resources to detect.

 

Supervision:  Requires partial supervision of other employees doing work which is related or similar to the supervisor, including assigning job duties, providing training, giving instructions and checking work.

 

Working Conditions:  Requires performing regular job functions in an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure to minor injuries or health hazards.

 

Physical Demands:  Requires light work, including continuous walking or operating simple equipment for extended periods of time as well as occasional strenuous activities such as reaching or bending.

 

 

 

Communication:  Requires summarizing data, preparing reports and making recommendations based on findings which contribute to solving problems and achieving work objectives.  This level also requires presenting information for use by administrative-level managers in making decisions.

 

Complexity:  Requires a combination of job functions to establish facts, to draw daily operational conclusions, or to solve practical problems.  This level also requires providing a variety of alternative solutions where only limited standardization exists.

 

Independent Action:  Requires objective assessment in analyzing and developing new work methods and procedures subject to periodic review and in making decisions according to established technical, professional or administrative standards.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  Bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university with a major study in education.

 

Experience:  No experience required.  Alternative plans as approved by the Bureau of Teacher Education and Professional Standards, State Department of Education, may be substituted for the formal education required by the class specification.

 

License/Certification:  Must meet certification standards as set by the New Hampshire State Board of Education Certification Standards for Educational Personnel in New Hampshire.  Area(s) of endorsement must be specified on an approved supplemental job description prior to recruitment at the agency level.

 

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:  Considerable background and understanding of basic education techniques and methods.  Ability to work with students assigned to programs such as migrant education, developmentally disabled or emotional disorders.  Ability to adapt teaching methods for a variety of settings.  Must be cooperative and emotionally mature and have the ability to work for the overall good of the program to which assigned.  Ability to work with other professional teachers in educational programs, as well as areas such as recreation and other extracurricular programs associated with the students to which assigned.  Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
