BASIC PURPOSE: To provide recreational therapy review and
evaluation and to develop and implement recreational therapy treatment programs
in order to enhance physical, social, psycho-social and cognitive capabilities
of patients and to promote leisure skills, social awareness, leisure awareness
and physical wellness.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assesses and
determines treatment needs and develops individualized recreational therapy and
group recreational therapy programs to improve the functional abilities of
patients.

Coordinates
and integrates recreational therapy treatment programs with other disciplines
and treatment programs to ensure consistent and comprehensive recreational
therapy.

Trains and
supervises newly hired recreational therapist, students and volunteers to
ensure that recreational therapy treatment standards are achieved, and
implements educational training sessions for staff.

Coordinates
and implements program changes or improvements.
Recommends purchase of supplies or resources and monitors/maintains
current equipment in use.

Coordinates
and provides community based activities, theory based groups, individual
treatment, physical wellness and leisure education.

Advises the
supervisor regarding all recreational activities and make recommendations for
program changes or improvements.
·
Participates
in conferences with other professionals to discuss resident needs.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:
Skill: Requires skill in recommending routine
changes in standardized operating procedures OR in retrieving, compiling, and
reporting data according to established procedures OR in operating complex
machines.
Knowledge: Requires logical or scientific understanding
to analyze problems of a specialized or professional nature in a particular
field.
Impact: Requires responsibility for achieving direct
service objectives by assessing agency service needs and making preliminary
recommendations for the development of alternative short-term program policies
or procedures. Errors at this level
result in incomplete assessments or misleading recommendations causing a
disruption of agency programs or policies.
Supervision: Requires direct supervision of other
employees doing related or similar work, including scheduling work,
recommending leave, reviewing work for accuracy, performance appraisal, or
interviewing applicants for position vacancies.
Working Conditions: Requires performing regular job functions in
an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical elements or a
number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure to minor
injuries or health hazards.
Physical Demands: Requires medium work, including continuous
strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting as well as
performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or coordination
in operating machines or equipment.
Communication: Requires summarizing data, preparing reports,
and making recommendations based on findings which contribute to solving
problems and achieving work objectives.
This level also requires presenting information for use by
administrative-level managers in making decisions.
Complexity: Requires coordinating a combination of
diverse job functions in order to integrate professional and technical agency
goals. This level also requires
considerable judgment to implement a sequence of operations or actions.
Independent Action: Requires objective assessment in analyzing
and developing new work methods and procedures subject to periodic review and
in making decisions according to established technical, professional or
administrative standards.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from
a recognized college or university with major study in recreational dance, art
or music therapy, physical education or a related area.
Experience: Three
years’ of experience in
therapeutic recreation, art therapy, music therapy or any combination totaling
three years.
License/Certification:
Successful examination and certification
by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) and
authorization to use the initials of CTRS (Certified Therapeutic Recreation
Specialist)
License/Certification for New Hampshire Hospital:
Alternate certification for designated position: possession of
certification as a registered art therapist by the American Art Therapy
Association and authorization to use the initials of ATR or possession of certification
as a music therapist by the Certification Board for Music Therapists, Inc. or
other expressive therapies, with respective certification by their national
boards
License/Certification for the Division of Juvenile Justice
Services: Successful examinations and certification by the National Council for
Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) and authorization to use the
initials of CTRS (Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist), or New
Hampshire Teacher Certification with an endorsement in physical education.
RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Knowledge of recreational therapy, group work
techniques and theory bases practice.
Knowledge of problems associated with mental illness or emotional
disabilities. Ability to offer
alternatives to modify behavioral patterns through recreational/physical
activities. Ability to plan recreational therapy program with an understanding
of the principles, practices, and techniques of professional Therapeutic
Recreation. Ability to communicate
effectively. Ability to secure the
cooperation of both professional and non-professional persons. Ability to establish and maintain effective
relationships with other employees and the patient population. Must be willing to maintain appearance
appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency
appointing authority.
