BASIC PURPOSE: To answer and route all incoming and
outgoing phone calls for a centralized communications system.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Receives calls coming
into the switchboard or two-way radio and takes required messages.
·
Dispatches emergency
and routine calls to appropriate source of assistance.
·
Records and phones in
service trouble or equipment malfunction.
·
Maintains telephone
listing and keeps logs of daily phone calls.
·
Relays road and
weather updates and furnishes other information as appropriate.
·
Performs typing and
clerical duties as required.
·
Enters data into
department computer for storage and retrieval.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:
Skill: Requires skill in applying instructions
to accomplish different job functions OR in operating machines for a variety of
different purposes.
Knowledge: Requires understanding and using
business or trades vocabulary or basic arithmetic to perform standard operating
procedures.
Impact: Requires responsibility for
contributing to agency objectives by ensuring the accuracy of support
activities within one or more organizational units. Errors at this level affect the work of others or have
measurable monetary consequences, and require verification and correction in
order to complete succeeding work operations.
Supervision: Requires no supervision of employees or
functions.
Working Conditions: Requires performing regular job functions
under good conditions in a safe working environment.
Physical Demands: Requires light work, including
continuous walking or operating simple equipment for extended periods of time
as well as occasional strenuous activities such as reaching or bending.
Communication: Requires explaining facts, interpreting
situations, or advising individuals of alternative or appropriate courses of
action. This level also requires
interviewing or eliciting information from state employees or members of the
general public.
Complexity: Requires a combination of job functions
using minimal judgment to perform a variety of job tasks according to clearly
prescribed standard practices and procedures.
Independent Action: Requires making a limited number of
choices in selecting among alternative courses of action under supervisory
guidance and in performing job functions according to a variety of prescribed
policies or procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Completion of high school or G.E.D.
equivalent. Each additional year
of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work
experience.
Experience: One year's communication experience
which includes typing, dispatching, computer/word processing or radio
communications.
License/Certification: None required.
RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Knowledge of the practices and
procedures of communication by standard radio, teletype and telephone
equipment. Knowledge of office
procedures and practices.
Knowledge of principles of good speech and the ability to speak clearly
and distinctly. Ability to make
decisions in accordance with established rules and regulations. Ability to recognize unusual conditions
and to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations. Ability to remember accurately, within
a reasonable amount of training time, the names and locations of personnel and
to understand essential departmental operations. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to
assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing
authority.
