CLASSIFICATION:  RADIATION HEALTH PHYSICIST IV

BASIC PURPOSE:  To supervise program administration of a radiation control section, to  function as a technical expert on radiation issues, and to participate in radiological/nuclear emergency responses.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·        Supervises the implementation of program objectives, including reviewing reports of subordinate professional staff and recommending policy revision to the program administrator.

 

·        Maintains liaison with federal state and local organizations relative to Radiation Control Program issues.  

 

·        Develops training plans for section staff and arranges for use of training resources.

 

·        Participates in preparing budget and budget reports including developing and preparing proposals for contracts and grants.

 

·        Evaluates specific radiation problems and brings to remediation and closure. Participates in emergency response.

Skill:  Requires skill in analyzing and interpreting data, policy, and procedures OR in using equipment in order to arrive at logical conclusions or recommendations.

 

Knowledge:  Requires logical or scientific expertise to resolve problems of a specialized or professional nature in a wide range of applications.

 

Impact:  Requires responsibility for achieving major aspects of long-range agency objectives by planning short- and long-term organizational goals, reviewing recommendations for procedural changes, and developing or revising program policies.  Errors at this level result in incorrect decisions at an administrative level, and are detected subsequent to implementation in an overall evaluation process.

 

Supervision:  Requires delegating supervisory or program responsibilities to subordinate managers, with overall accountability for hiring employees or approving program policies.  The supervisor in this position assumes responsibility for an organizational unit, including developing long-range plans, analyzing staffing requirements, and formulating system wide policies and procedures.

 

Working Conditions:  Requires performing regular job functions in a controlled environment with minimal exposure to disagreeable job elements and little risk of hazard to physical or mental health.

 

Physical Demands:  Requires light work, including continuous walking or operating simple equipment for extended periods of time as well as occasional strenuous activities such as reaching or bending.

 

Communication:  Requires reviewing summaries and reports and making decisions to solve problems or to achieve work objectives as well as articulating and expressing those solutions and goals.  This level also requires formal presentations of solutions and goals to employees and the general public to increase the responsiveness of the agency toward the demands of its client system.

 

Complexity:  Requires formulating the combination of overall job functions in order to address highly diverse or novel situations requiring new concepts and imaginative approaches to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.

 

Independent Action:  Requires independent judgment in planning and evaluating work procedures and in supervising the development of professional, technical and managerial standards under administrative direction and according to broad departmental guidelines.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  Master’s Degree from an approved college or university with a major study  in health physics, radiation physics, radiological sciences, physical science, chemistry, or biological sciences.

 

Experience:  Seven years of relevant experience, including three years in a leadership role such as project manager or supervisor of professional staff.

 

                                                            OR

 

Education:  Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major studies in health physics, radiation physics, radiological sciences, physical science, chemistry or biological science including course work in math through basic calculus. 

 

Experience:  Eight years’ of relevant experience including three years in a leadership role such as project manager or supervisor of professional staff.

If degree is in a field other than one of the above, then one of the following must have been obtained in addition to the degree. 

 

·         Completion of Navy Nuclear School for Radioactive Materials Career Path. 

 

OR

 

 

·         AART (American Registry of Radiological Technologists) Certification related to radiation-generating equipment.

 

OR

 

·         CHP (Certified Health Physicist) Certification

 

 

                                                           

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must be at least 18 years old, eligible to hold a New Hampshire’s driver’s license, and to have access to transportation for use in statewide travel.

 

 

Recommended Work Traits:  Must be willing and able to perform job duties as a radiation worker as per the New Hampshire Rules for the Control of Radiation.  Must have knowledge of supervisory principles and techniques; employee training and development; budgeting; management; Natural Sciences; Health Physics; Nuclear Physics; Nuclear Engineering; Radiation Physics; physics; chemistry; biological science; agency, state and federal laws, rules and guidelines pertaining to radiation physics and radiation safety practices.  Requires skill in use of radiation safety equipment; personal computer and radiation testing equipment.  Ability to use research methods in gathering data; prepare meaningful concise and accurate reports; deal with problems involving many variables within unfamiliar context; cooperate with coworkers on group projects; demonstrate strength to lift and carry heavy equipment (as much as 45 lbs.) over rough terrain and up ladders and /or temporary stairs in construction situations.  Must be able to work out of doors in all types of weather conditions.  Required incident response activities may require evening and weekend work and may require wearing a pager or carrying a cell phone for 24-hour on-call availability.  Must be willing to obtain security clearance for entry into classified areas of federal facilities if required (e.g. inspection or incident response for classified sections of federal facilities).
