BASIC PURPOSE: To assist in
evaluating, inspecting, registering and reviewing license applications for
radiation generating equipment or radioactive materials and to assist with
radiation emergency responses when needed.
CHARACTERISTIC
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs license
application reviews under general supervision.
·
Performs
radiation-generating equipment inspections.
·
Performs measurements
of radiation levels including collecting samples for analysis, interpreting
results, and preparing reports.
·
Participates in incident/accident
response involving radioactive material or radiation generating equipment.
·
Assists in evaluating
radiation problems in the medical, academic, industrial or environmental use of
radiation sources and recommends appropriate action.
·
Uses a variety of
radiation survey detection equipment.
·
Confers knowledgeably
with other state radiation program staff, federal agencies, or the general
public, regarding radiation matters.

FACTORS:
Skill: Requires skill
in developing formats and procedures for special applications OR in
investigating and reviewing the use of equipment and data for a specialized
function.
Knowledge: Requires
logical or scientific understanding to analyze problems of a specialized or
professional nature in a particular field.
Impact: Requires
responsibility for achieving direct service objectives by assessing agency
service needs and making preliminary recommendations for the development of
alternative short-term program policies or procedures. Errors at this level result in
incomplete assessments or misleading recommendations causing a disruption of agency
programs or policies.
Supervision: Requires no
supervision of employees or functions.
Working
Conditions: Requires performing regular job
functions in an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical
elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure
to minor injuries or health hazards.
Physical
Demands: Requires medium work, including
continuous strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting
as well as performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or
coordination in operating machines or equipment.
Communication: Requires
explaining facts, interpreting situations, or advising individuals of
alternative or appropriate courses of action. This level also requires interviewing or eliciting
information from state employees or members of the general public.
Complexity: Requires a
combination of job functions to establish facts, to draw daily operational
conclusions, or to solve practical problems. This level also requires providing a variety of alternative
solutions where only limited standardization exists.
Independent
Action: Requires objective assessment in
analyzing and developing new work methods and procedures subject to periodic
review and in making decisions according to established technical, professional
or administrative standards.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor's
degree from an accredited college or university with major studies in health
physics, radiation physics, or a radiological, physical, chemistry, or
biological science with mathematics courses up through basic calculus. If degree is in a field other than one
of the above, then one of the following must have been obtained in addition to
the degree:

Completion of Navy
Nuclear School for Radioactive Materials Career Path.
OR
·
AART (American
Registry of Radiological Technologists) Certification related to radiation
generating equipment.
OR
·
CHP (Certified Health
Physicist) Certification.
Experience: Three years'
experience working in the field of radiological health, health physics or with
radiation sources.
SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS: Must be at least 18 years old, eligible
to hold a New Hampshire’s driver’s license, and have access to transportation
for use in statewide travel.
RECOMMENDED
WORK TRAITS: Willing and able to
perform job duties characterized as a radiation worker as per the New Hampshire
Rules for the Control of Radiation.
Eligible, willing, and able to participate in applicable NRC, EPA, FEMA,
FDA, DOE, and other training courses, workshops, meetings, and seminars, which
may require out-of state travel for several weeks at a time. Able to travel overnight for
inspections and incident response within New Hampshire. Able to lift and carry survey
equipment, which may weigh as much as 45 pounds, over rough terrain and up
ladders and /or temporary stairs in construction situations. Able to work out of doors in all types
of weather conditions to participate in incidents and inspections. Willing and able to work evenings and
weekends and to carry a pager or a cell phone for 24-hour on-call
availability. Eligible and willing
to obtain security clearance for entry into classified areas of federal
facilities if required (e.g. inspection or incident response for classified
sections of federal facilities).
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with
both employees and the general public.
Willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and
responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
