BASIC PURPOSE:  To perform skilled work painting and finishing surfaces of buildings and other structures and equipment.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·        Cleans surfaces to be painted using sandpaper, burners, scrapers and sanding machines.

 

·        Prepares surfaces to be painted including sheet-rock repairs and taping of joints with joint compound.

 

·        Mixes and matches paints.

 

·        Applies paint to exterior and interior of buildings, equipment, furniture and structural steel; erects and removes scaffolds.

 

·        Performs wall-papering and stenciling.

 

·        Performs related work such as glazing, plastering and cement work.

 

·        Maintains records of time and supplies used.

Skill:  Requires skill in applying instructions to accomplish different job functions OR in operating machines for a variety of different purposes.

 

Knowledge:  Requires knowledge of business practices and procedures or technical training in a craft or trade, including working from detailed instructions, to apply knowledge in a variety of practical situations.

 

Impact:  Requires responsibility for contributing to agency objectives by ensuring the accuracy of support activities within one or more organizational units.  Errors at this level affect the work of others or have measurable monetary consequences, and require verification and correction in order to complete succeeding work operations.

 

Supervision:  Requires partial supervision of other employees doing work which is related or similar to the supervisor, including assigning job duties, providing training, giving instructions and checking work.

 

Working Conditions:  Requires performing regular job functions in an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure to minor injuries or health hazards.

 

Physical Demands:  Requires medium to heavy work, including continuous physical exertion such as frequent bending, lifting or climbing.

 

Communication:  Requires obtaining and exchanging information, referring inquiries to the appropriate source, or responding to questions from state employees or members of the general public.

 

 

 

Complexity:  Requires a combination of job functions using minimal judgment to perform a variety of job tasks according to clearly prescribed standard practices and procedures.

 

Independent Action:  Requires making a limited number of choices in selecting among alternative courses of action under supervisory guidance and in performing job functions according to a variety of prescribed policies or procedures.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  Completion of high school or G.E.D. equivalent and a standard apprenticeship.  An Associate's degree in a related area may be substituted for the apprenticeship training. 

 

Experience:  One year's experience as a painter.  Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

 

License/Certification:  None required.

 

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:  Thorough knowledge of standard practices and processes of the trade and of paints, varnishes, stains, lacquers, enamel, solvents and other materials used in painting.  Thorough knowledge of preparing surfaces for paint and skill in mixing paints, matching, blending, harmonizing and contrasting colors, tints and shades in the application of paints and other finishes by brush or air-gun.  Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade and ability to work from scaffolds.  Ability to understand and execute oral and written orders without immediate supervision.  Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
