CLASSIFICATION:  PAINT SHOP MANAGER I

BASIC PURPOSE:  To perform skilled painting work including partial supervision of painters in painting and finishing surfaces of buildings, equipment and furniture.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·        Cleans surfaces to be painted by using burners, scrapers, sanding machines and other abrasives; mixes and matches paints.

 

·        Performs related work such as glazing, paper hanging, stencil lettering, plaster repairing.

 

·        Supervises and assists in the application of paint to exterior and interior surfaces of buildings, equipment, structural steel and other surfaces.

 

·        Requisitions supplies and equipment.

 

·        Maintains and assists in the preparation of records on material and labor cost.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:

 

Skill:  Requires skill in recommending routine changes in standardized operating procedures OR in retrieving, compiling and reporting data according to established procedures OR in operating complex machines.

 

Knowledge:  Requires knowledge of business practices and procedures or technical training in a craft or trade, including working from detailed instructions, to apply knowledge in a variety of practical situations.

 

Impact:  Requires responsibility for contributing to agency objectives by ensuring the accuracy of support activities within one or more organizational units.  Errors at this level affect the work of others or have measurable monetary consequences, and require verification and correction in order to complete succeeding work operations.

 

Supervision:  Requires partial supervision of other employees doing work which is related or similar to the supervisor, including assigning job duties, providing training, giving instructions and checking work.

 

Working Conditions:  Requires performing regular job functions in an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure to minor injuries or health hazards.

 

Physical Demands:  Requires medium to heavy work, including continuous physical exertion such as frequent bending, lifting or climbing.

 

Communication:  Requires obtaining and exchanging information, referring inquiries to the appropriate source, or responding to questions from state employees or members of the general public.

 

 

 

Complexity:  Requires a combination of job functions to establish facts, to draw daily operational conclusions, or to solve practical problems.  This level also requires providing a variety of alternative solutions where only limited standardization exists. 

 

Independent Action:  Requires making a limited number of choices in selecting among alternative courses of action under supervisory guidance and in performing job functions according to a variety of prescribed policies or procedures.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  Completion of high school or G.E.D. equivalent plus a standard apprenticeship.  An Associate's degree in a related area may be substituted for the apprenticeship training. 

 

Experience:  Two years' experience as a journeyman painter.

 

License/Certification:  None required.

 

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:  Thorough knowledge of standard practices and processes of the trade and of paints, varnishes, stains, shellacs, enamels, solvents and other materials in painting.  Thorough knowledge of methods of preparing metal, wood, steel and other materials and surfaces for painting.  Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade and ability to work from scaffolds.  Skill in mixing paints, in matching, blending, harmonizing and contrasting colors, tints and shades in the application of paints and other finishes by brush or air-gun.  Ability to understand and execute oral or written orders and execute them without immediate supervision.  Ability to maintain harmonious relationships with employees.  Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
