CLASSIFICATION:  OFFSET PRESS OPERATOR II

BASIC PURPOSE:  To operate offset reproduction equipment such as a process camera, offset press and plate-maker to provide single and multi-color printed material according to reproduction standards.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·        Operates and maintains an offset press for the printing of departmental forms and reports.

 

·        Makes, rules and touches up negative plates or originals used in duplicating forms; performs color separations and layouts.

 

·        Mixes ink to obtain correct color contrast.

 

·        Cleans, oils, adjusts and makes minor repairs to all reproduction equipment.

 

·        Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies such as paper, chemicals and ink; maintains records of all printing completed.

 

·        Designs and works up forms from rough drafts submitted by state agencies, making suggestions for changes as needed.

 

·        Assists in supervising subordinate Offset Press Operators as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:

 

Skill:  Requires skill in applying instructions to accomplish different job functions OR in operating machines for a variety of different purposes.

 

Knowledge:  Requires understanding and using business or trades vocabulary or basic arithmetic to perform standard operating procedures.

 

Impact:  Requires responsibility for contributing to immediate, ongoing agency objectives by facilitating the direct provision of services to the public or other state agencies.  Errors at this level result in inaccurate reports or invalid test results and require significant investment of time and resources to detect.

 

Supervision:  Requires partial supervision of other employees doing work which is related or similar to the supervisor, including assigning job duties, providing training, giving instructions and checking work.

 

Working Conditions:  Requires performing regular job functions in an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure to minor injuries or health hazards.

 

Physical Demands:  Requires medium work, including continuous strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting as well as performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or coordination in operating machines or equipment.

 

 

 

Communication:  Requires obtaining and exchanging information, referring inquiries to the appropriate source, or responding to questions from state employees or members of the general public.

 

Complexity:  Requires a combination of job functions to establish facts, to draw daily operational conclusions, or to solve practical problems.  This level also requires providing a variety of alternative solutions where only limited standardization exists.

 

Independent Action:  Requires a range of choice in applying a number of technical or administrative policies under general direction and in making routine decisions or in recommending modifications in work procedures for approval by supervisor.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  Completion of high school, G.E.D. or its equivalent.

 

Experience:  Two years' experience in the operation of an offset press and related equipment.

 

License/Certification:  None required.

 

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:  Knowledge of the operation of single and multi-color offset press and related equipment.  Considerable knowledge of machine adjustment required in printing various grades of commonly used paper.  Ability to set up forms, make negatives, and keep records of printed material being used.  Ability to operate specialized printing equipment.  Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
