CLASSIFICATION:  OFFSET PRESS OPERATOR I

BASIC PURPOSE:  To operate an offset press and related equipment to produce forms according to reproduction standards.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·        Operates an offset press and related equipment to prepare printed forms.

 

·        Prepares press to print single and multi-color copy from plates making necessary adjustments as needed.

 

·        Examines proof and adjusts press controls to obtain specific color registration.

 

·        Transfers prints to plates, sensitizes plates and prepares for printing.

 

·        Cleans, oils, adjusts and makes minor repairs to printing equipment.

 

·        Performs bindery operations as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:

 

Skill:  Requires skill in applying instructions to accomplish different job functions OR in operating machines for a variety of different purposes.

 

Knowledge:  Requires understanding and using business or trades vocabulary or basic arithmetic to perform standard operating procedures.

 

Impact:  Requires responsibility for contributing to immediate, ongoing agency objectives by facilitating the direct provision of services to the public or other state agencies.  Errors at this level result in inaccurate reports or invalid test results and require significant investment of time and resources to detect.

 

Supervision:  Requires no supervision of employees or functions.

 

Working Conditions:  Requires performing regular job functions in an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure to minor injuries or health hazards.

 

Physical Demands:  Requires medium work, including continuous strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting as well as performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or coordination in operating machines or equipment.

 

Communication:  Requires obtaining and exchanging information, referring inquiries to the appropriate source, or responding to questions from state employees or members of the general public.

 

Complexity:  Requires a combination of job functions using minimal judgment to perform a variety of job tasks according to clearly prescribed standard practices and procedures.

 

 

 

Independent Action:  Requires making a limited number of choices in selecting among alternative courses of action under supervisory guidance and in performing job functions according to a variety of prescribed policies or procedures.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  Completion of high school, G.E.D. or its equivalent.

 

Experience:  One year's experience in the operation of offset duplicating equipment.

 

License/Certification:  None required.

 

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:  Knowledge of the operation of an offset duplicator.  Considerable knowledge of various grades of paper commonly used in printing.  Some knowledge of the techniques to adjust presses.  Ability to set up forms.  Ability to keep records of printed material being used.  Ability to withstand noise of presses.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with persons for whom the printing is done.  Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
