BASIC PURPOSE: To assist in
supervising and to provide quality direct care services for geriatric and/or
psychiatrically impaired residents, including assisting professional staff in
providing motivation, recreation and learning activities.
CHARACTERISTIC
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
·
Maintains a safe
environment, making appropriate repair needs known and proper cleaning of
resident areas and equipment are done utilizing principles of infection control
and universal precautions.
·
Ensures that
treatment plans are followed, including vital signs, performing bedside care,
and collecting specific samples for routine laboratory examinations as directed
by a nurse.
·
Maintains basic
records for treatment and unit management purposes including notes regarding
resident activity and behavior, evaluation of specific activity results, and
ordering non-medical supplies for unit operations.
·
Provides residents
with basic information, assists in interpersonal relationships and facilitates
the adjustment of residents to their living environment.
·
As directed by a
nurse, assists in planning and providing for the daily needs of residents with
ADL and minor treatment procedures.
·
Supervises residents
in various groups for resident enjoyment and maintenance of ADL skills and
current levels of functioning.
·
Assists in
coordinating staff schedules and weekly resident assignment sheets for
individualized resident care.
·
Conducts CNA
orientation for the first week on a nursing unit and provides information to
subordinate staff.
·
Attends in-service
programs and team meetings to broaden knowledge and enhance growth of work
development.

DISTINGUISHING
FACTORS:
Skill: Requires skill
in applying instructions to accomplish different job functions OR in operating
machines for a variety of different purposes.
Knowledge: Requires
understanding and using business or trades vocabulary or basic arithmetic to
perform standard operating procedures.
Impact: Requires
responsibility for contributing to immediate, ongoing agency objectives by
facilitating the direct provision of services to the public or other state
agencies. Errors at this level
result in inaccurate reports or invalid test results and require significant
investment of time and resources to detect.
Supervision: Requires
partial supervision of other employees doing work which is related or similar
to the supervisor, including assigning job duties, providing training, giving
instructions and checking work.
Working
Conditions: Requires performing regular job
functions in an adverse working environment containing a combination of
disagreeable elements which impact significantly upon the employee's capacity
for completing work assignments.
This level includes work-related accidents or assault.
Physical
Demands: Requires medium to heavy work,
including continuous physical exertion such as frequent bending, lifting or
climbing.
Communication: Requires
explaining facts, interpreting situations, or advising individuals of
alternative or appropriate courses of action. This level also requires interviewing or eliciting
information from state employees or members of the general public.
Complexity: Requires a
combination of job functions using minimal judgment to perform a variety of job
tasks according to clearly prescribed standard practices and procedures.
Independent
Action: Requires making a limited number of
choices in selecting among alternative courses of action under supervisory
guidance and in performing job functions according to a variety of prescribed
policies or procedures.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation
from high school or G.E.D. equivalent.
Experience: Two years of
experience as a licensed Nursing Assistant.
License/Certification: See Special
Requirements listed below.
SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS:
1.
Must
maintain current license as a Certified Nursing Assistant with the New
Hampshire Board of Nursing.
2.
Satisfactory
completion of in-service hours, within the specified time frame, as required by
HCFA
3.
Successful
completion of the Nursing Assistant I program.
4. Appointment
to this classification is provisional pending satisfactory completion of all
required written and physical components of the certified nursing assistant
programs approved by the NH Board of Nursing and in conjunction with the State
Division of Personnel.
RECOMMENDED
WORK TRAITS: Knowledge of the physical and emotional
needs of elderly people. Knowledge
of sanitary procedures. Knowledge
of simple building cleaning methods.
Some knowledge of games and recreational activities. Ability to recognize, identify and
respond to physical and emotional needs of geriatric residents. Ability to maintain statistical and
narrative records. Ability to
discharge housekeeping and primary resident care responsibilities. Ability to communicate effectively
orally and in writing. Ability to
establish and maintain effective working and social relationships with
residents, staff, relatives and volunteers. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to
assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing
authority.
