BASIC PURPOSE: To provide
quality direct care services for geriatric and/or psychiatrically impaired
residents, including providing assistance in activities of living and
maintaining a safe and clean environment.
CHARACTERISTIC
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides for the
needs of residents, such as cleanliness, nourishment, emotional comfort and
activities such as sensory simulation as directed by a nurse.
·
Provides basic
nursing care taking vital signs and collecting specific specimens for routine
laboratory examinations.
·
Completes daily
assigned tasks such as clothing distribution, replenishing charts, emptying
laundry hampers, and cleaning furniture.
·
Observes and
interacts with residents, reports observations to a Licensed Nursing Assistant
II or nurse to assist in care planning.
·
Documents in records
all care rendered describing behaviors and reactions of residents.
·
Promotes resident
independence in meeting individual needs.
·
May act as preceptor
for orientation of new staff as assigned by supervisor.
·
Utilizes principles
of infection control and universal precautions to foster resident treatment,
recovery and/or prevention of infection.
·
Prepares and assists with
transferring residents to special functions, trips, consults, religious
activities, and other places within and outside the facility.
·
Encourages and
maintains an open communication system and positive interactions with
residents, families, and guardians.
·
Participates in
organizational meetings and committees.
·
Attends and
participates in in-service educational programs to broaden knowledge related to
the position.

DISTINGUISHING
FACTORS:
Skill: Requires
minimal skill in performing a series of routine procedures OR in operating
equipment according to standardized instructions.
Knowledge: Requires
understanding and using business or trades vocabulary or basic arithmetic to
perform standard operating procedures.
Impact: Requires
responsibility for contributing to agency objectives by ensuring the accuracy
of support activities within one or more organizational units. Errors at this level affect the work of
others or have measurable monetary consequences, and require immediate
verification and correction in order to complete succeeding work operations.
Supervision: Requires no
supervision of employees or functions.
Working
Conditions: Requires performing regular job
functions in an adverse working environment containing a combination of
disagreeable elements which impact significantly upon the employee's capacity
for completing work assignments.
This level includes work-related accidents or assault.
Physical
Demands: Requires medium to heavy work,
including continuous physical exertion such as frequent bending, lifting or
climbing.
Communication: Requires obtaining
and exchanging information, referring inquiries to the appropriate source, or
responding to questions from state employees or members of the general public.
Complexity: Requires a
combination of job functions using minimal judgment to perform a variety of job
tasks according to clearly prescribed standard practices and procedures.
Independent
Action: Requires making a limited number of
choices in selecting among alternative courses of action under supervisory
guidance and in performing job functions according to a variety of prescribed
policies or procedures.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation
from high school, G.E.D. or its equivalent.
Experience: Four months
experience as a Nursing Assistant Trainee at the recruiting facility with
subsequent licensure as Nursing Assistant, or licensed as a Nursing Assistant
with four months experience.
License/Certification: See Special

SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS:
1.
Appointment to this classification is provisional pending
satisfactory completion of all required written and physical components of all
certified nursing assistant programs which are approved by the NH Board of
Nursing and in conjunction with the State Division of Personnel, within the
first five weeks of employment or completion of the program.
2.
Must maintain a current license as required by the New
Hampshire Board of Nursing.
3.
Completion of the nursing assistant competency evaluation
program within the first four months of
employment and satisfactory
completion of in-service hours, within the specified time frame, as
required by HCFA.
RECOMMENDED
WORK TRAITS: Ability to maintain a rehabilitative
attitude and relationship with residents.
Ability to relate to residents and co-workers in a positive and empathic
fashion. Ability to respond to
supervision and work cooperatively with others in the discharge of care and
treatment responsibilities.
Ability to perform routine manual tasks and primary resident care
services. Ability to participate
as part of a larger treatment effort aimed at re-socializing and rehabilitating
institutionalized residents. Ability
and willingness to participate in in-service training program to develop skills
and knowledge leading to enhanced effectiveness. Ability to read and write to meet documentation
requirements. Must be
willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and
responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
