BASIC PURPOSE: To perform water safety activities for
patrons at a state park, beach, recreational facility, or institution.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Monitors waterfront
areas for safety and adherence to water safety rules in order to alleviate
potential hazards and prevent accidents and drownings.

Uses lifesaving
equipment and techniques such as first aid to make rescues and help injured
victims when necessary.

Sets up, arranges,
and puts away portable waterfront facilities and lifesaving equipment.
·
Maintains cleanliness
of pool, beach, waterfront area, and lifesaving equipment and reports faulty
equipment to supervisor.

Records rescues and
first aid situations on forms for submittal to supervisor.
·
May coordinate
recreational and therapeutic water activities.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:
Skill: Requires minimal skill in performing a
series of routine procedures OR in operating equipment according to
standardized instructions.
Knowledge: Requires common sense understanding of
instructions in performing a series of routine procedures.
Impact: Requires responsibility for
contributing to agency objectives by ensuring the accuracy of support
activities within one or more organizational units. Errors at this level affect the work of others or have
measurable monetary consequences, and require verification and correction in
order to complete succeeding work operations.
Supervision:
Requires no
supervision of employees or functions.
Working Conditions: Requires performing regular job
functions in an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical
elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure
to minor injuries or health hazards.
Physical Demands: Requires medium work, including
continuous strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting
as well as performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or
coordination in operating machines or equipment.
Communication: Requires obtaining and exchanging
information, referring inquiries to the appropriate source, or responding to
questions from state employees or members of the general public.
Complexity: Requires a combination of job functions
using minimal judgment to perform a variety of job tasks according to clearly
prescribed standard practices and procedures.
Independent Action: Requires making a limited number of
choices in selecting among alternative courses of action under supervisory
guidance and in performing job functions according to a variety of prescribed
policies or procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Completion of one year of high
school.
Experience: No experience required.
License/Certification: Must possess a current Red Cross
Lifeguard Certificate or other equivalent water safety and first aid
credentials.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be at least 15 ½ years of age.
RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Working knowledge of modern lifesaving
methods and techniques.
Fundamental knowledge of first aid practices and procedures. Working knowledge of water safety and
modern lifesaving equipment.
Ability to swim strongly.
Ability to meet the public with courtesy and tact, and to enforce the
rules and regulations with regard to beach and water activities. Ability to establish and maintain
harmonious relationships with other employees and the general public. Must be willing to maintain appearance
appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency
appointing authority.
