BASIC PURPOSE: To develop and implement college
recruitment strategies and comprehensive student development based programs in
residence life and counseling.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Coordinates the
efforts of industry, business, and health agencies in student recruitment and
job placement.
·
Develops and
implements student development based residence life programs in campus
residence halls; coordinates on-campus housing operations.
·
Develops marketing
strategies for departmental recruitment efforts.
·
Travels to high
schools and interviews students and parents to recruit students for enrollment.
·
Compiles and
distributes annual student handbooks which may include reference material
relating to self-assessment, job search, interview techniques, resume writing,
peer counseling, crisis intervention or other topics.
·
Counsels, guides and
advises students in academic, career and personnel adjustment concerns.
·
Meets periodically
with associate counselors to discuss current student problems and to recommend
solutions or alternative counseling strategies.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:
Skill: Requires skill in developing formats
and procedures for special applications OR in investigating and reviewing the
use of equipment and data for a specialized function.
Knowledge: Requires logical or scientific
expertise to resolve problems of a specialized or professional nature in a wide
range of applications.
Impact: Requires responsibility for achieving
direct service objectives by assessing agency service needs and making
preliminary recommendations for the development of alternative short-term
program policies or procedures.
Errors at this level result in incomplete assessments or misleading
recommendations causing a disruption of agency programs or policies.
Supervision: Requires direct supervision of other
employees doing related or similar work, including scheduling work, recommending
leave, reviewing work for accuracy, performance appraisal, or interviewing
applicants for position vacancies.
Working Conditions: Requires performing regular job
functions under good conditions in a safe working environment.
Physical Demands: Requires light work, including
continuous walking or operating simple equipment for extended periods of time
as well as occasional strenuous activities such as reaching or bending.
Communication: Requires summarizing data, preparing
reports and making recommendations based on findings which contribute to
solving problems and achieving work objectives. This level also requires presenting information for use by
administrative-level managers in making decisions.
Complexity: Requires coordinating a combination of
diverse job functions in order to integrate professional and technical agency
goals. This level also requires
considerable judgment to implement a sequence of operations or actions.
Independent Action:
Requires independent judgment in
planning and evaluating work procedures and in supervising the development of
professional, technical and managerial standards under administrative direction
and according to broad departmental guidelines.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Master's degree from a recognized
college or university with major study in the subject area in which the
counseling vacancy exists. Each
additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of
required work experience.
Experience: Five years' experience in education,
business or industry in the field in which the counseling vacancy exists.
License/Certification: Eligibility for New Hampshire driver's
license.
RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Considerable knowledge of counseling
principles and techniques.
Considerable knowledge of learning, behavior, and emotional patterns of
young adults. Knowledge of
personality, achievement, prognostic, and placement tests and the techniques
involved in their use and interpretation.
Knowledge of statistical analysis techniques. Ability to maintain rapport with students, faculty and
staff. Ability to prepare
reports. Ability to instruct
students, faculty and staff concerning
counseling techniques, leadership roles, and human relations. Must be willing to maintain appearance
appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency
appointing authority.
