BASIC PURPOSE:
To perform supervisory skilled
mechanical work concerned with the maintenance and repair of automotive snow
grooming and other mechanical equipment assigned to a state facility.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Plans, assigns and
reviews work of mechanics involved in repairing and maintaining equipment in
adherence to established policies and standards.
·
Supervises the
preparation and processing of requisitions and records on all equipment
assigned to the work location.
·
Conducts inspections
of assigned equipment and facilities where repair work is performed to ensure
that work is properly completed.
·
Outlines technical
procedures for subordinates involved in the performance of complicated repairs
on gasoline and diesel equipment.
·
Supervises work on
electrical, hydraulic and exhaust systems, light and heavy duty equipment, fuel
injection, transmissions, brakes, and all related repairs to determine cause
and effect of necessary repair.

Supervises storage of
equipment and parts with responsibility for keeping maintenance and inventory
records on all parts and equipment.

Conducts annual
inspection of state-owned vehicles.

Skill: Requires skill in developing formats
and procedures for special applications OR in investigating and reviewing the
use of equipment and data for a specialized function.
Knowledge: Requires knowledge of business
practices and procedures or technical training in a craft or trade, including
working from detailed instructions, to apply knowledge in a variety of
practical situations.
Impact: Requires responsibility for
contributing to immediate, ongoing agency objectives by facilitating the direct
provision of services to the public or other state agencies. Errors at this level result in
inaccurate reports or invalid test results and require significant investment
of time and resources to detect.
Supervision: Requires direct supervision of other
employees doing work which is related or similar to the supervisor, including
scheduling work, recommending leave, reviewing work for accuracy, performance
appraisal, or interviewing applicants for position vacancies.
Working Conditions: Requires performing regular job
functions in an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical
elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure
to minor injuries or health hazards.
Physical Demands: Requires medium work, including
continuous strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting
as well as performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or
coordination in operating machines or equipment.
Communication: Requires explaining facts, interpreting
situations, or advising individuals of alternative or appropriate courses of
action. This level also requires
interviewing or eliciting information from state employees or members of the
general public.
Complexity: Requires a combination of job functions
to establish facts, to draw daily operational conclusions, or to solve
practical problems. This level
also requires providing a variety of alternative solutions where only limited
standardization exists.
Independent Action: Requires objective assessment in
analyzing and developing new work methods and procedures subject to periodic
review and in making decisions according to established technical, professional
or administrative standards.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Associate's degree in auto mechanics
from a recognized college or technical school. Each additional year of approved formal education may be
substituted for one year of required work experience.
Experience: Five years' experience as a journeymen
mechanic in a large garage with some experience in operating heavy equipment,
two years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity such as a manager
or assistant manager. Each
additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of
required formal education.
License/Certification: Valid New Hampshire commercial
operator's license.
RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Knowledge of standard methods,
practices and tools used in repair of automotive and other heavy duty
equipment. Knowledge of the
construction, operation and maintenance of automotive and other internal
combustion equipment. Knowledge of
the occupational hazards and precautionary measures applicable to maintenance,
repair and operation of automotive and maintenance equipment. Knowledge of the repair and maintenance
of diesel equipment. Knowledge of
fuel injection repair and maintenance.
Skill in the use of tools and in the operation of machines and equipment
in the shop. Skill in locating
defects in motor equipment.
Ability to provide expert mechanical advice to users of the
equipment. Ability to direct the
work of a staff of mechanics.
Ability to estimate the quantity of repair work and the need for replacement
parts. Ability to make reports and
keep records. Must be willing to
maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as
determined by the agency appointing authority.
