CLASSIFICATION:  ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNICIAN I

BASIC PURPOSE:  To assist an environmentalist level position in a variety of environmental activities in accordance with established standards and criteria and to make inspections relative to enforcement of state laws relating to the environment.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·        Performs assigned field studies relative to enforcement of state laws and regulations pertaining to the environment.

 

·        Collects samples of water suspected of contamination for analysis by laboratory technicians.

 

·        Assists in carrying out a program for environmental education.

 

·        Maintains environmental records and prepare reports.

 

·        Prepares and enters environmental data into a computer; retrieves, revises, updates and reproduces data as required.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:

 

Skill:  Requires skill in recommending routine changes in standardized operating procedures OR in retrieving, compiling and reporting data according to established procedures OR in operating complex machines.

 

Knowledge:  Requires understanding and using business or trades vocabulary or basic arithmetic to perform standard operating procedures.

 

Impact:  Requires responsibility for contributing to agency objectives by ensuring the accuracy of support activities within one or more organizational units.  Errors at this level affect the work of others or have measurable monetary consequences, and require verification and correction in order to complete succeeding work operations.

 

Supervision:  Requires no supervision of employees or functions.

 

Working Conditions:  Requires performing regular job functions in an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure to minor injuries or health hazards.

 

Physical Demands:  Requires light work, including continuous walking or operating simple equipment for extended periods of time as well as occasional strenuous activities such as reaching or bending.

 

Communication:  Requires obtaining and exchanging information, referring inquiries to the appropriate source, or responding to questions from state employees or members of the general public.

 

Complexity:  Requires a combination of job functions using minimal judgment to perform a variety of job tasks according to clearly prescribed standard practices and procedures.

 

Independent Action:  Requires minimal choice in performing routine duties under immediate supervision and in following simple instructions according to standardized policies and procedures.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent.  Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

 

Experience:  Two years' experience performing technical environmental work in air analysis, noise or water quality control, forestry, soils, hydrology, geology, botany, biology or a related environmental field.

 

License/Certification:  Valid New Hampshire driver's license. 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  WASTE MANAGEMENT DIVISION ONLY:

 

Initial employment requires the ability to pass a baseline medical examination indicating the individual is physically capable of assuming all duties required, including wearing respiratory protective equipment in accordance with the recommendations of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

 

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:  Elementary knowledge of the principles and practices of environmental science.  Ability to apply computer skills to enter and retrieve environmental data.  Ability to perform simple field studies, collect field samples, and assume inspectional responsibilities.  Ability to follow written and oral instructions.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, environmental groups, and the general public.  Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
