CLASSIFICATION:  ENTOMOLOGIST I

BASIC PURPOSE:  To investigate and survey assigned geographic areas to obtain and provide information concerning recommended procedures for pest management and control.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·        Surveys current insect damage to assess potential environmental impact and identify need for future management and control.

 

·        Researches entomological data to develop specialized procedures for pest management and control.

 

·        Recommends and presents strategies for controlling insect destruction affecting plant growers and other interested parties.

 

·        Determines cause of insect damage or plant disease and recommends methods of eradication or control.

 

·        Consults with authorities, local county agricultural agents, and foresters relative to insect and plant disease suppression and control problems.

 

·        Conducts inspections and issues certificates for plants, plant products and other materials moving in interstate commerce and subject to various quarantine regulations.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:

 

Skill:  Requires skill in developing formats and procedures for special applications OR in investigating and reviewing the use of equipment and data for a specialized function.

 

Knowledge:  Requires logical or scientific understanding to analyze problems of a specialized or professional nature in a particular field.

 

Impact:  Requires responsibility for contributing to immediate, ongoing agency objectives by facilitating the direct provision of services to the public or other state agencies.  Errors at this level result in inaccurate reports or invalid test results and require significant investment of time and resources to detect.

 

Supervision:  Requires partial supervision of other employees doing work which is related or similar to the supervisor, including assigning job duties, providing training, giving instructions and checking work.

 

Working Conditions:  Requires performing regular job functions in an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure to minor injuries or health hazards.

 

Physical Demands:  Requires medium work, including continuous strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting as well as performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or coordination in operating machines or equipment.

 

Communication:  Requires summarizing data, preparing reports and making recommendations based on findings which contribute to solving problems and achieving work objectives.  This level also requires presenting information for use by administrative-level managers in making decisions.

 

 

Complexity:  Requires a combination of job functions to establish facts, to draw daily operational conclusions, or to solve practical problems.  This level also requires providing a variety of alternative solutions where only limited standardization exists.

 

Independent Action:  Requires a range of choice in applying a number of technical or administrative policies under general direction and in making routine decisions or in recommending modifications in work procedures for approval by supervisor.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  Bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university with major study in entomology, invertebrate zoology, or plant pathology.  Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

 

Experience:  One year of field experience in entomology in connection with insect and plant disease programs. 

 

License/Certification:  Possession of a valid New Hampshire driver's license and/or have access to transportation for statewide travel.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

 

1.  Must have the physical ability to engage in vigorous outdoor work while engaged in conducting surveys, field inspections or participating in various pest control activities.

2.  Must have demonstrated computer skills.

 

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:  Knowledge of the principles and practices of the science of entomology.  Knowledge of the methods and procedures used in control of insects and parasites affecting plant life.  Knowledge of the scientific research techniques and procedures used in the identification and control of insects and other plant pests.  Knowledge of chemical and mechanical methods and other phases of pest control or programs.  Knowledge of federal and state regulations governing the control of insects and parasites affecting plant life.  Ability to map forest or land areas and to interpret aerial photographs.  Ability to conduct inspections and determine that products are free from injurious pests and plant diseases.  Ability to enlist public support from landowners in matters associated with plant protection programs.  Ability to compile and analyze technical data and prepare reports.  Ability to plan, assign and review the work of technical and non-technical personnel.  Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely.  Ability to establish and maintain public interest and confidence in a program of insect and parasite control.  Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
