BASIC PURPOSE: To perform routine and semi-technical
work in the field, office or laboratory in connection with the investigation,
location, design and maintenance of highways.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintains and
relocates traffic recording instruments, and performs speed and vehicle
classification counts.
·
Operates the transit
and level on routine surveys in training to develop technical competency and
skill.
·
Plots cross sections,
profiles and field notes and makes tracings on the notes.
·
Records topographic survey
data.
·
Prepares
semi-technical work in the laboratory involving testing of highway materials
and prepares reports on the results.
·
Retrieves and
compiles factual data on motor vehicle accidents in order to accurately locate
the accident site.
·
Maintains hand tools
and survey equipment and makes minor repairs when necessary.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:
Skill: Requires minimal skill in performing a
series of routine procedures OR in operating equipment according to
standardized instructions.
Knowledge: Requires understanding and using
business or trades vocabulary or basic arithmetic to perform standard operating
procedures.
Impact: Requires responsibility for
contributing to agency objectives by ensuring the accuracy of support
activities within one or more organizational units. Errors at this level affect the work of others or have
measurable monetary consequences, and require verification and correction in
order to complete succeeding work operations.
Supervision: Requires no supervision of employees or
functions.
Working Conditions: Requires performing regular job
functions in an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical
elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure
to minor injuries or health hazards.
Physical Demands: Requires medium work, including
continuous strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting
as well as performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or
coordination in operating machines or equipment.
Communication: Requires minimal personal interaction
or communication, including providing simple information in response to routine
questions from employees within the agency.
Complexity: Requires a combination of job functions
using minimal judgment to perform a variety of job tasks according to clearly
prescribed standard practices and procedures.
Independent Action: Requires making a limited number of
choices in selecting among alternative courses of action under supervisory
guidance and in performing job functions according to a variety of prescribed
policies or procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from high school, G.E.D. or
its equivalent.
Experience: One year's experience at a level equal
to Engineering Aide I.
License/Certification: None required.
RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Knowledge of fundamental highway
engineering. Skill in the use of
surveying equipment. Ability to
carry out minor sub-professional engineering tasks without detailed
instructions. Ability to remain at
one physical location for extended periods. Ability to make simple drawings and tracings. Ability to establish and maintain
effective working relationships with other employees and the general
public. Must be willing to
maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as
determined by the agency appointing authority.
